The massive form of the horonorum crossed with red mossambica now creates the hybrid pennyfish which grows extremly fast due to the hybridization. More importantly the improvement now allows a very high skinless boneless fillet recovery from the whole pennyfish which is in the range of 46% to 50%. The pennyfish skinless boneless fillet recovery from the same hybrid in 1980 was only 25%. So my selection method for each new generation (which saw a less than 3 gram fry to grow to a breeder size in under 45 days) was to breed 1,000 or more fingerlings and select 5 new breeders that looked stockyier and replace 5 of the oldest breeders from the breeding cage that had slightly less improvement with the newly selected breeders. I did this every seven days for 34 years which is a total of of 1,750 selections for improvement of this horonorum geneline or genome. This created a genetic pressure that resulted in moving the yield of recoverable meat from hybrids produced by these breeders from 25% (in 1963) to 46-50% (in 2008). I suggest that this improvement breaks all of the records for production improvement of any other animal due to the selection process, ever!!!!! Mike Sipe has spent over 40 years researching various technologies for for improving fillet yields, total yields, reducing cost, increase yields per square meter or square foot per day and recycle water and energy used to raise the fish, create sustainable yields that allow people anywhere to produce crops of fish that improve the nutrition and harmony of individuals and populations. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ One of the ways we helped to expand our market was also a show and tell. I or my wife would walk into a restaurant and ask when might be a good time to speak with the chef. We then made a n appointment to return when the chef was going to be in. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We came back and brought with us Five or ten pounds of fillet from our high quality growing facility where we had purged about a thousand pounds starting a week before and had our own fish filleter prepare the fillets and put them on ice. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ We would ask the Chef to prepare the tilapia three different ways: Breaded and Fried , Broiled and the third was the chefs choice. We asked him to prepair enough of the fillets to give everyone a taste, eveb the waitresses. These fish were free andwe told the owner or manager that we would never bill the restaurant for any unsold fish. We would replace any fish that were kept cold on ice for a week but were not sold. So the trial of our tilapia””cherry snapper” could cost the restaurant nothing. Then we said we were going to bill the restaurant as much as he was paying for red snapper. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The most essential part of this program was the availability of fresh skinless boneless fillets that elimated the need for what is called kitchen prep. Fillets were gauranteed to be the feshest because of our weekly replacement program. Any fillets not sold when our delivery was made was replaced with the current weeks delivery was made. This was supposed to solve the problem of having our fillets be less than fresh. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Fortunatly, because of the the excellant flavor of the CherrySnapper, all of it was sold by the time our new delivery arrived at the restaurants. The only time we ever had a delivery and a pickup was when a red lobster employee buried a five pound bag of fillets under the ice in the wrong freezer drawer. So since the shelf life of chilled fresh CherrySnapper is over 21 days we took it back and had a delicious meal the next evening. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Panama Study ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A gentleman from Mexico brought Jan and I to Panama and bought a little over 100 pennyfish breeders. We helped them build breeder cages and the set up breeder conditions where more than 10,000 pennyfish were bred and put into growing cages at 1,000 per cage and put in the growing situation in a lake. All of these fingerlings were fed feed twice a day along with the competing strains of tilapia fingerlings. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The two strains of tilapia that were stocked in cages that were the same size and were built to the same specifications . ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1. the Israel strain, which were sex reversed 2. fingerlings produced by YY males. 3. pennyfish ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Every cage was fed twice a day and the results were in this lake in Panama at an average temperature of 82 degrees throughout the test. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All of the tilapia were harvested at an average weight of 1 kilogram each. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The number days and total yield of skinless boneless fillet as for each strain in pounds of fillet were as follows. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ israel strain (sex reversed)=SR 280 33% 330 YY super mails 275 35% 350 pennyfish 225 40% 400 ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ So the pennyfish produced 400 pounds of fillet in 225 days. The israel strain (SR ) Produced 330 pounds of fillet in 280 days, and YY super mails produced 330 pounds of fillet in 275 days. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is: In cages stocked with 1,000 fingerlings starting at 20 grams each average size. PANAMA STUDY A gentleman from Mexico brought Jan and I to Panama and purchased a little over 100 pennyfish breeders. We helped him build breeder cages and the set up the breeder conditions where more than 10,000 pennyfish were bred and stocked into growing cages at 1,000 per cage and put in the growing situation in a lake. All of these fingerlings were fed feed twice a day along with the competing strains of tilapia fingerlings. The three strains of tilapia that were stocked in cages (1,000- .5 ounce fingerilings) that were the same size (10'X4'X8') and were built to the with the same specifications . 1. the Israel strain, were sex reversed fingerlings of t. nlotica 2. YY male fingerlings (also t. nilotica) 3. pennyfish fingerlings Every cage of tilapia was fed twice a day . The lake in Panama had an average temperature of at least 82-85 degrees throughout the test. Each group of the tilapia was harvested when they reached an average weight of 1 kilogram each. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The number days and total yield of skinless boneless fillet as for each strain in pounds of fillet were as follows. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Israel strain (sex reversed)=SR 280 days to harvest 33% skinless boneless fillet YY super mails 275 days to harvest 35% skinless boneless fillet pennyfish 225days to harvest 40%skinless boneless fillet ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ kilograms of skinless boneless fillet from PER CAGE ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ the pennyfish produced 46O KILOGRAMS of fillet in 225 days. The israel strain (SR ) Produced 330 KILOGRAMS of fillet in 280 days, YY super males produced 310 KILOGRAMS of fillet in 275 days. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 460/ /330/ /310: kilograms or 1,112/ /739/ /682: pounds ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ the pennyfish grew........... 2.04 kilograms skinless boneless fillet per day ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The israle strain grew............1,18 kilograms skinless boneless fillet per day ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ YY super males produced grew ..........1.13 kilograms skinless boneless fillet per day ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The results of this experiment were that The daily growth of 1,000 pennyfish grown in the pennyfish cages was just over two kilograms per cage per day compared to just over one pound per cage per day achieved by both the sex reversed israle strain and the YY super male strain. In other words the pennyfish produced more than twice as much meat as either of the two other two strains which were sold as the best growing tilapias. Each week for 35+years I allowed 2,000 to 4,000 fry loose in a pond or growing tank, that were bred by the best body form, and fed them well and over the next few weeks or so grew them to 3-4 inches each and then went through each of the 2,000 to 4,000 fingerlings selecting the best six to eight fish that had the best body form and might be better than the best in the breeder pool from gene pool loose in a pond or growing tank. I then looked every fish over that was in the gene pool and put in the best, next and removed the least best, and so on until each chosen breeder had its place in the new gene pool, for that week. I was able to change the body form little by little until the new hybrids formed by crossing these males with female t. mossambica to produce pennyfish that had the improved body form. The original pennyfish yielded 25%of its whole body weight as skinless boneless fillets and the newest improved body form is now producing pennyfish that yield a skinless boneless fillet of 46-50% of the whole body form, whereas tilapia nilotica which makes up 90% of the world farmed tilapia only yields 33% of its whole body weight. If the 90% were switched to pennyfish the yield would be 46 to 50% which means that the billions of pounds now grown and harvested to yield 500,000 pounds there would yield an additional 27% fillets at no additional cost. In other words 27% of the whole body weight of the billion pounds of whole fish would be free.
